Staff Equity Work

Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion centered Professional Development sessions are offered regularly for staff and facilitated by district leadership, site leadership, and the SRVHS Equity Cohort.

 

Equity Cohort

Cohort: A group of people who learn together. 

The SRVHS Equity Cohorts 1 & 2 focus on increasing our personal racial literacy and creating a more just and inclusive school and community. 

In the Fall of 2019, several SRVHS staff members formed our first Equity Cohort, with representation from teachers, administrators, and classified staff. We started with personal learning, mostly through reading How to Be an Anti-Racist by Ibram X. Kendi and monthly discussions. For many of us, this was an eye opening experience, and we became eager to move this work into our professional lives. Second semester we read We Want to Do More than Survive by Dr. Bettina Love, which was focused specifically on the educational sphere, and Me and White Supremacy by Layla Saad, an interactive journaling book, aimed at helping white people examine their own complicity in white supremist culture. As a group, we moved from theory to practice and planned professional development for our site, as well as worked with larger groups in the district. In February, we traveled to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, cementing the need for equity work in our school and lives. As we moved through the coronavirus pandemic and the increasing urgency of the Black Lives Matter movement, we continued to read, discuss and plan more professional development. We are currently working on our 2020 Action Goals (more info to come soon!). Additionally, Liv Hanley and Krystin Alcaraz started a second Cohort for more staff members to learn and grow together. Both cohorts now meet monthly and will work to create a more just and inclusive school and community.

Breaking Down the Walls

SRVHS proud to offer Breaking Down the Walls to students annually. This program helps students break down the social walls that sometime separate them from their peers, and build new connections across social groups.
